About the Temple:
Nanjangud is a sacred town in Mysuru, known for Srikanteshwara Swamy temple on the banks of river Kapila or Kabini. Nanjangud is referred as ‘Dakshina Kashi’ an abode of Lord Shiva in Southern India. The town attained holiness because of the Sangam of river Gundlu and Kapila. This spot is called ‘Parashurama Kshetra’ where Parashurama is believed to have had himself expiated for the sin of beheading his mother.

Nanjangud is inscribed in the holy Shiva Purana as Garalapuri. The demon Keshi on attaining boon from Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu, that they shall not be able kill Keshi, he began troubling the people. At the plea of devotees and sages, Lord Shiva appeared in Garalapuri (present Nanjangud) and killed the demon. Lord Shiva promised that a part of his divine self shall stay there and bless the humanity always. Lord Shiva assured that this place will be a remover of sins-“papa vinashini”, any person praying to Lord Nanjundeshwara after taking a holy dip in river Kabini will be rid of all sins and will be blessed.
