About the Temple:
Sri Durgaparameshwari temple, Mandarthi is a holy place of Goddess Sri Durgaparameshwari located at 25 kms from Udupi. Mandarthi is one of the ancient and most popular prominent pilgrimage site located to the North of Udupi. According to the legends, five Nagakanyas (Devarathi, Nagarathi, Charurathi, Mandarthi and Neelarathi) went to Kailasa with a desire to marry Lord Subramanya and gets cursed by Nandi to remain unmarried and suffer in forest fire. Maharishi Vyaghrapada saw these five snakes when he was wandering in the Sahyadri Ghats. He knew about them by his divine insights and said that their curse would be removed by a royal person. In due course of time, king Devavarma of Avanthi who had been banished and wandering in disguise near Sahyadri mountains decides to save the snakes and wraps the snakes with a piece of cloth. These snakes slid out of cloth wrapper at different locations and the snake called Mandarthi reached a part of forest which was then called as "Mandarthi".
The royal couple along with sage Sudeva prayed Goddess Durga with utmost devotion and then Goddess assured that she would manifest at Mandarthi with all her powers as Vana Durga. In 18th century Vana Durga was converted to Durgaparameshwari with the installation of a new idol due to the violent nature of Vana Durga on priest families.
