About the Temple:
Sri Raja Rajeshwari temple is situated at Polali in Karyangala village of Bantwal taluk in Dakshina Kannada district. The temple is located on the banks of Palguni river surrounded by a wide lush of paddy fields. The temple was built in the 8th century and was developed over the years by many royal dynasties who ruled the region. The idol of the main deity is more than 9 feet tall, moulded completely from clay of medicinal properties. Beside the main deity idol there are idols of Mahaganapathi, Subramanya and Bhadrakali made of clay. Once in 12 years, the idols are coated with herbal clay mixture prepared hundred years ago containing special medicinal properties during ‘Lepashta Gandha’. There is a shrine of Shri Durga Devi located in the outer quadrangle made of granite and another shrine of Kshetrapala stands facing east. The roof of the temple is furnished with wooden carvings.

In ancient days the place where temple was located was called as Pural. The word Pural or Purel means changing sides, which may have aroused due to the abrupt turn of Palguni River near the temple. It is believed to be built by King Suratha and the King offered his own crown to the deity. The idol of the main deity is believed to be 5000 years old. It is reported that the king has carved the clay idol of Sri Raja Rajeshwari and offered penance to deity after losing most of his kingdom in war and being cheated by his own ministers.
