About the Temple:
Sri Kengal Anjaneyaswamy temple is one of the popular pilgrimage centres situated in Bangalore-Mysore highway, 10 kms from Ramanagara. As per the history locally believed, the idol of Lord Hanuman is self-manifested from red rocks. About 1,000 years ago when sage Vyasaraya was passing by this place, he found a bright red boulder which looked like Lord Hanuman etched on it. He visualized Hanuman etched from the red rock. The omnipresent Lord Hanuman fulfilled Vyasaraya wish by slowly emerging from the rock, which was then installed by the sage by performing the necessary rituals, is the popular belief. The term “Kengal” is formed from “Kemmpu Kallu” means “Red Rock” in Kannada, hence it is known as Kengal Hanumantha.
The temple was believed to be built by Hoysala kings but after their era, the temple almost reduces to rumble. A few decades ago, Ex-Chief Minister of Karnataka Sri Hanumanthaiah renovated the temple and brought it to limelight again. A fascinating phenomenon about this temple is that the lord seems to be turning himself over the years. Few decades ago, he was facing North (sideways) and over the years he now looks East (straight). This is a popular “Prarthana Sthalam” for childless couples and people with other illness.
